Design of a Mini Rice Harvester for Rural and Small Scale Rice Farmers in Tropical and Developing Countries

Food insecurity, price volatility and under-employment of rice farmers in Liberia are key drivers for the development farming machines locally. This project work aims to design fabricate a simple, low-cost, efficient mini harvester powered by solar panel translating learnt concepts principles engineering into physical workable harvester. A circular blade cutter, DC motor, battery cells main components deployed on rod-plate setup. The cell taps irradiance from sun and, with help charge controller, recharges 12V, 35Amp.hour battery. supplies current motor that drives cutter during harvesting. fabricated fulfilled all objectives was justifiable overall financial cost (USD 194.00), ease use, reproduction. performance harvester, terms smoothness cut completion area, found be near 100%. However, field efficiency 30.75% an aggregated % payback period only 71 hours operation, equivalent 60,696 sq.m harvested farm. Incessant clogged cutter's surface stem removal delays, slowdowns as operator makes turns, switch failures re-fix delays tests primary causes low efficiency. With improved spacing between secondary guard, is expected improve significantly. An average noise level 88.8 decibels detected harvester's operation; advisably, hearing protection earmuffs may necessary safely operate dailies 6 hours.
